A World in the Making: The Shakers examines the enduring design legacy of the Shakers, whose values of community, labor, and equality shaped a distinctive visual language rooted in purpose and spiritual life. Pairing original Shaker objects with contemporary works they have inspired, the exhibition explores how these principles continue to resonate today—informing ideas of inclusion, gender, and intentional living.

This exhibition is organized by the Vitra Design Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia, and the Wüstenrot Foundation, in collaboration with Shaker Museum.
