LECTURE & BOOK SIGNING | Albert Gallatin and a Nation Free from Debt.

The Swiss Nationality Room Committee and NRIEP invite you to a special lecture on April 18, 2026, at 5:00 PM in CL 332, featuring author Gregory May, who will discuss Albert Gallatin and his impact on early U.S. financial policy.

The talk will highlight Gallatin’s impact as Secretary of the Treasury, including his role in the Louisiana Purchase, his support of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and his vision for a nation guided by financial responsibility and limited debt. It will also explore his debates with Alexander Hamilton and the relevance of these ideas today.

DATE: Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 5:00 PM.
LOCATION: University of Pittsburgh, Cathedral of Learning, Room 332 (CL 332), 4200 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA.

SPEAKER: Gregory May, historian and author specializing in the early American republic, with a focus on financial history and racial inequality.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE:

  • 5:00 PM | Lecture by Gregory May on Albert Gallatin’s role in early U.S. financial policy and national debt debates.
  • 6:00 PM | Reception and book signing in the Croghan-Schenley Room.

Gregory May will be available to sell and sign his book, Jefferson’s Treasure: How Albert Gallatin Saved the New Nation from Debt, during the reception in the Croghan-Schenley Room at 6:00 PM. Gallatin re-enactor Ron Duquette will also be present.
